How To Take Care of Your Teeth This Holiday Season

Posted .

The holidays can get busy, and it’s easy to let the little things slide. Don’t let your dental routine be one of them! With all the treats, parties, and photos of the holiday season, it is more important than ever to keep your smile bright.

Remember that, though there is room in your holiday diet for treats, all sticky, sugary, or acidic foods should be eaten in moderation. When you do choose to eat these foods, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water after eating. Don’t graze on sugary or acidic snacks–have a treat, then stop. If possible, chew a piece of sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating, to stimulate saliva flow to clean your teeth.

Don’t forget to brush and floss. This takes a total of 6-7 minutes a day, and saves a lot of money, time, and even potentially pain or infection. Remember: brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session, and floss your teeth once a day, for 2-3 minutes each time.

Use the proper tools to ensure that your hygiene habits are effective. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, as hard bristles can damage your tooth enamel and gums. Use single-filament floss to reduce the risk of fraying or breaking, and to ensure proper strength to clean between your teeth. If you choose to add mouthwash to your routine, make sure it is a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than merely a cosmetic one.
